Frequently Asked Questions about K-12 Education in El Salvador

What are Bach-1, Bach-2, and Bach-3?

On the student information sheet, Bach 1 = 1st year high school. Bach. 2 = 2nd year high school. Bach 3=3rd year high school. After the first year of secondary school, students have two options: “Bachillerato General” (a 2 year pre-university track) or “Bachillerato Técnico” (a 3 year technical track in which students choose additional classes in areas such as computer science, accounting, English or health care). So some students complete two years of high school while others complete three years of high school.

Why do students sometimes drop out of school?

Students drop out of school for a variety of reasons: a move, gang threats, failure to succeed, or perhaps they need to work to support the family.  When this happens, we will give your donation to another student recommended by our church partners in El Salvador. We will notify you when this happens.

When does school start in El Salvador?

School starts in mid-January and continues through November.

How will I be informed of how my student is doing in school?

We will send you report cards for your student twice a year.

How can I correspond with my student?

The Seeds of Hope Ministry thrives on relationships between students and their sponsors.  Typically, students write to sponsors 2-3 times/year. We will invite you to write a brief card or letter to your student(s) in mid-November, spring, and summer.

Can I correspond with my student via email?

If you would like to do so, you can write your email in a letter you send to your student. Although students do not have computers at home, some may have access to email at school or on cell phones. Many of the older students are on Facebook.

I don’t speak Spanish.  How can I write to my student?

When we invite you to send a letter or card to your student, we will provide you with some basic questions and phrases in Spanish.  If you don’t know anyone who can assist you with translation, you can send the letters electronically for help from our Seeds of Hope translation team.*  You might also try an online translation website for very simple sentences.

Can I visit my student in El Salvador?

Yes! Please let us know if you are interested in more information about the summer mission trip with Family of Christ. Youth who are entering their senior year in high school as well as adults are invited to join us.

*Note:  We are always looking for additional Spanish translators.  Please contact us if you or someone in your family would be willing to translate letters via email.
